The owner of Rockstar Games does not consent to the placement of his games on the subscription services on the first day

The CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the company that owns Rockstar Games, doesn’t think it makes sense to put its own games on subscription services like Xbox Game Pass on day one. The advent of Xbox Game Pass is something very new and has all kinds of layers that developers are trying to get around. Some games have made great use of their accessibility, allowing word of mouth to spread, prompting players to purchase additional in-game content, etc. There are still some companies that don’t think this is a valid approach to their titles.

Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick recently Talk to GamesIndustry.biz About the day and date subscription form, expressing doubt. Zelnick noted that Take-Two likes to support subscriptions when it makes sense, specifically for older titles that have already been slashed. Zelnick also noted that Sony agrees with that sentiment, referring to its recent statement that it would not add first-party titles to its new PlayStation Plus tiered service on day one because it makes no economic sense. The CEO of Take-Two has stated that they are willing to change their thinking in the future if things change or if it makes sense to shift in that direction, but for now, the legacy titles are what they’ll put into these services.

“We have supported various subscription services and are happy to do so,” Zelnick said. “Our skepticism was about the availability of frontline console products on the day and date with subscription. That doesn’t make sense because, economically speaking, we don’t think consumers are willing to pay for it – why would they? – and we can’t turn our business around back in an economically meaningless way.”

In November 2021, Rockstar Games developed the redesigned version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on Xbox Game Pass on day one. granted, San Andreas It wasn’t available as a standalone title outside of this service and was likely a way to try and motivate players to buy the completely redesigned trilogy. Either way, it’s good to hear that Zelnick isn’t ignorant of changing markets and is willing to change their business approach if it makes sense to release addresses on these services on day one.
